Learn About Poverty in the United States

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the domestic anti-poverty, social justice program of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Its mission is to address the root causes of poverty in America by supporting community-controlled, self-help organizations, and through transformative education.

K-12 Resources

Poverty USA – Tour the 51st state – Poverty, USA! Learn about the root causes of poverty and effective solutions that can end it. Take the poverty quiz to uncover surprising facts. Access lesson plans, television and radio advertisements and more!

Poverty in America Student Action Project – This toolkit is designed to help Catholic elementary school principals, teachers, and catechists engage their students in a poverty awareness campaign. K-8 lesson plans for each grade level are accompanied by age-appropriate activities that teach charity and social justice.

Multi-Media Youth Art Contest – Use your artistic talent to illustrate how people living in poverty are working together to create lasting, long-term solutions.

Learn About Poverty Around the World

Catholic Relief Services is the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States. They work to alleviate suffering and provide assistance to people in need in more than 100 countries, without regard to race, religion or nationality.

K-12 Resources

Food Fast is a 24-hour hunger awareness retreat for Catholic youth. Focusing on global poverty and hunger, Food Fast offers a journey of solidarity with our brothers and sisters overseas, as a way of living out our Catholic faith.

 

Operation Rice Bowl, is a Lenten program that calls participants to pray; fast; learn, and give while learning about life in poor countries. Recipes from these locales give students a taste of what life is like.

 

Learn about Fair Trade and find out how you can help promote economic justice, reduce global poverty, and protect the environment. Students enjoy the opportunity to host fair trade sales, or Raise Money Right by selling fair trade chocolate. It tastes good to do good!

Going Global With Youth – Featured lessons and simulations created by teachers for teachers. Though created with a special emphasis for use at the high school level, they can easily be adapted for use at the middle school or collegiate level.
