What is New Life Family Center?
New Life serves families and individuals in Miami-Dade County who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
We aim to prevent or reduce the emotional traumas that result when people lose their homes.
New Life Shelter
This motel-style facility provides a safe environment for 15 families to take refuge while they get back on their feet. Children are the central focus of New Life. Staff and volunteers work to bring a sense of normalcy after turmoil by nurturing them through structured activities. We build self-esteem and encourage personal growth through:
- Art Therapy
- Tutoring
- Academic and Family Counseling
- Field trips that provide educational opportunities in a fun-filled atmosphere
Our wrap around services empower our clients to regain financial and emotional stability, access and maintain permanent housing, and build strong family relationships. By providing a temporary home to our families, New Life Shelter affords clients the opportunity to reflect on their situations and develop supervised plans for returning to self-sufficiency. This process facilitates personal and professional growth allowing our clients to grab hold of new beginnings.
Homeless Prevention Services
The prevention of homelessness is the main goal of Catholic Charities’ Emergency Services Outreach Program at New Life Family Center. This program is also available to residents of Broward County.
Our comprehensive approach for individuals and families who are facing economic hardships due to unemployment or underemployment includes:
- Short-term rent/mortgage assistance for people facing eviction or foreclosure
- Utility bill payment for clients who have received disconnection notices
- Food vouchers
- Information and referrals to address other needs.
Program participants are assisted by trained case management professionals who help them overcome their current obstacles to avert homelessness and regain stability.
How We Do It
New Life’s success depends on the support of donors and volunteers who provide time and resources to assist families, especially the children, with multiple activities including birthday parties, field trips, and fun activities.
Volunteers are needed Monday through Sunday 8:00am – 8:00pm to:
- Present informational workshops
- Assist with clerical tasks
- Write grants/Fundraise
- Perform general maintenance tasks
- Conduct activities with children
If you would like to spend a few hours making a difference in the lives of people who are trying to get back on their feet, visit our volunteer page. There you will find all the information you need to get started!
